Ok, so I've got this one sorted out:
A rise in global temperature means melting ice caps and rising sea levels. But, rising sea levels means less mercury in fish, and more area for aquaculture. This is all meaningful for 2 reasons; while I don't actually like fish. Using the roughly three quarters of the earths surface as a means of farming to support our ever growing populations is near necessary. While the increase in temperature will also make some terrestrial areas unfarmable. Additionally, perhaps it will increase the possibilities of water transportation, which is plausibly lower energy than land transportation. At very least the panama canal will be bigger, and the north west passage will open up.
Short version: No Need to Worry.

I am giving serious consideration to the possibility of starting up World of Warcraft again. I have been thinking this over for a few weeks. I am some distance from a decision.
Primary factors are consideration of things like, do I have the time and self control for this?
Ultimately, the way I am perceiving it is that I would undertake it as a hobby. This is distinct, because what it was before does not qualify as a hobby. I am looking at structured play times. Organized, lightly scheduled. I have to decide if I am capable of that, and if I am, if it would fit in my life as it works these days.
Partly I am looking at it as a form of connection with old friends. Does the idea of playing again interest any of you who are also out these days. Or any of you who are in but might be willing to adventure with me. Or anyone who has never played?
I have to decide what I want out of it, and how that works. But the way the discussion in my head has been going it's less of an issue of IF and more of an issue of WHEN. That is, I am no longer convinced that I will stay out forever, but that does not mean that now is the time to return.
Who thinks what about this?
Also, for past/current players, what's the action for voice chat these days? How well does it work, etc?

[15 Feb 2009|05:04am] |
I've gone back to Pirates. It's been ok. Though, the dancing kind of sucks. On the other hand, I largely avoided the dancing before, which means the information rewards for doing it are changing the over-all game play.
More importantly, I've decided the game I really really want right now doesn't exist. What I want is a US Western game made on the Sid Meirer's Pirates Model. Sort of an open SandBox kind of game where you have the choice of it being kind of Oregon Trail-ish. but also the options for gold panning, driving cattle, sticking up stage coaches, cattle rustling, gambling, bank robberies, catching outlaws, guiding wagon trains, gunfights, etc. i would include things about and around Indian culture*, but i wouldn't include too much about the Mormons. i think it would be too hard to show them impassively. I believe they would be bound to come of as good -proselytizing, or bad - which would upset them. The Mormon history in the west may be balanced, but i think that would be impossible to portray as it could only be a small portion of the whole game.
having open options for some kind of personal quest - like in Pirates, finding lost family, defeating the evil nemesis, etc.
Instead of the Pirates! model, it could use the Pokemon model. Or it could be a MMMORG. Though, after my brain quickly compared wagon trains and cattle drives the WoW Escort missions I quickly became unamused.
*If it works well, I'd like to see it be possible for players to end up on good or bad terms with various tribes. depending on player actions.

Ok, I know what game I want, and it does not exist.
A post-Zombie-Apocalypse 3rd person shooter/melee game based heavily on stealth.
stealth is needed because: limited ammo difficulty in fighting swarms of zombies with melee weapons zombie Pavlovian learning that gunshots = food means that shooting attracts more Zs
there would of course be plenty of zombie killing action. and some levels or encounters would be with other survivors.
get to it.

I've been playing minesweeper.
The games front is very very bad.
I thought I would play through the first Warcraft game again. But while the sound didn't work (under my limited install attempts) I quickly discovered that gameplay itself was too old and just not feasible.
I tried Dungeon Keeper again. but that wasn't quite doing it.
I played Sid meier's Pirates again, but that got boring quick enough (and reminded me of the boredom previously experienced). Tried SimAnt again, but not for long. Cried softly at the memory of how bad Empire of the Ant was (an Ant Colony based RTS) and couldn't even bring myself to load it.
I think there were a few other things. But it's not going well.
I'm having surprisingly fond memories of Tenchu. Still wish assassin's creed didn't take such an upgrade. And still can't bring myself to plaay net hack.
What do people think about harvest moon?

What I think I would enjoy, is the Lord of the Rings story being redone with Transformers characters. Not that I'm a Transformers fan, but something about the idea strikes me.
Has anyone played any of the Harry Potter games?
Can anyone suggest a PC RPG that meets the following suggestions: Isn't super fast paced/twitch gaming. Isn't Final Fantasy. Probably Fantasy Genre, but not necessarily. Is Fun or Awesome or Compelling. Doesn't need an ultra modern machine to play on.

So, I had an idea for the best video game ever.
Street Fighter Chess.
You set up your team as you like. Cammy as your pawns? Akuma as your king? Ryu as your rooks, whatever you like. -alternative each piece that is duplicated (knight, bishop, rook) might be different but similar characters. ryu/ken. guy/charlie. etc. or might just be flat out different (ryu/charlie).
In theory, imagine the character based chess sets. civil war, lord of the rings, whatever.
here it becomes kind of like battle chess. when a piece captures another piece, you are taken into a streetfighter set up and you control, as per usual street fighter game design, your piece and who ever wins get's the square. possibly damage or Health should be adjusted in favor of the attacking piece. because in real chess there's no chance of failure for capture.
i would suggest that it should use a later street fighter library (alpha 3 or beyond) to include a heavy mix of characters.
i don't know if damage should carry from one fight to the next.
because there's the always unknown outcome of any attempted fight, it makes it kind of like stratego. and possibly that should be the model instead of chess. but i am not convinced.
if this shitty game ever had tournies, i would suggest predetermined character to piece selections. or possibly just just character lists (shrinking the available library).
one interesting point of strategy is team set up. are you good with bishops but weak with knights? are you good with ryu but weak with charlie? then should ryu be a knight to account for your knight weakness, or a bishop to maximize your strengths?
should the king be captured? and able to fight for himself? or checkmated as in usual chess? or could check mate force a street fighter battle where the defending king's player looses the game if the king looses the match, but play continues with elimination of the attacking piece if the king wins? only to be forced into a second round in the event of two pieces simultaneously threatening the king?

| Today is our anniversary. |
[25 Jan 2009|08:17am] |
We are going out for breakfast now. It's been snowing nicely.
No other concrete plans for the day. Fish Hatchery had been in mind, but snow will likely nix that.
Be well all.
